"today in the bay's" bob redell is live on the scene with what is happening right now. good morning, bob. >> reporter: you have three lanes of southbound 280 because of this body. we are still waiting for the coroner to arrive on the scene. it is hard to get an eta of when this will be reopened. chp is saying it could be another 45 minutes. that will depend on when the coroner arrives. a call came in around 3:15. people driving down southbound 280 saw the body in the middle of the road. the paramedics came on the scene and declared this person deceased. it is considered to be a hit and run. chp right now does not have any witnesses, does not know who did this. >> after 3:00 this morning, about 3:14, received a call that there was a ped in the roadway. the units responded and located a female in the roadway. fire department

near tully. bob redell is live at the scene gathering information. what is the latest? >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. you can see behind me the crash was so severe that the front part of what we believe was a ford focus or ford fusion was flattened. the driver that died here on the scene is still stuck inside. san jose police believe he was speeding on southbound monterrey highway when he lost control around 2:00 this morning. his car clipped two trees and sheered off a light pole before coming to rest in those bushes in front of a fast food restaurant. san jose police officer who happened to be on a traffic stop nearby heard the crash, responded. paramedics declared the driver dead a short time later.

about someone who is killed. we are looking over where bob was talking about. this is a little confusing camera 101 at the 682 interchange. that's the direction the camera was pointing over my shoulder. this is southbound 280 as it transitions over to northbound 680 around the 101 interchange. this is basically 280 going to 680 as you are heading through san jose and making your bend around. two lanes are currently blocked. you don't see a lot of slowing at the scene but you did see all the flashing lights. the corner from chp as bob was on the camera there, they are say the coroner should be there about 4:45 and we're guessing another 45 minutes after that. probably 5:30 as we are looking at the lanes to reopen if there are no further issues. the light volume of traffic and, of course, friday, should mean things are moving relatively smoothly, slow for that zone as you approach the 101/680 interchange. we'll track this. back to you. >>> good morning. a good-looking day shaping up. a little bit of wind out there and those winds are going to pick up. right now, rather calm compa

over to traffic anchor, mike inouye. mike? >>> as you saw, bob talked about the coroner potentially arriving on scene. that white van we just saw. that may be the issue. let's look at some maps and talk about the areas and get you located again. here is the south bay. you see 101 northbound with the orange have the that's the build for your morning commute. bob is talking about monterrey highway, a major roadway through san jose. southbound is closed. northbound, that is why you see the orange heading up towards interstate 280. the big issue is that it is approaching kurtner. kurtner and tully are open as you are heading toward highway 87. this is offering a distraction. this is open. around the scene from alma, you are going to have to go around the target shopping center to the north. you will be redirected by the local police as well. alma is open heading toward 87. we see slowing between the two. pretty typical stuff. another issue for the south bay. one we showed you a couple seconds ago. we are looking toward a power outage caused by this. this power pole. the sweeper truck, t

tips over towards half moon bay where you will find highway one as well as our own bob redell. there are some changes out there. what is the deal with? >> at 11:00 a.m. will be the ribbon cutting on the devil's slide tunnel, the tom lantos tunnel named after the late congressman that pushed very hard for this project. we are on the north end of the tunnel. you are going to have two tunnels, one northbound, one southbound, 4200 feet long, 30-feet wide. this is the result of a $439 million project that's been going on for quite some time. it is significant not only for the bay area but the state of california. this is the first tunnel project that's been completed in nearly 50 years. the last one was the third bore of the calicot tunnel in the '60s. it was designed to be a bypass for highway one at devil's slide. we have been reporting this over the years. mike, you are familiar with this unfortunately. how many times there have been rock slides that have shut down the road basically cutting off pacifica from half moon bay and unfortunately, a lot of injuries and fatalities, people goi
